Computers for Kids Program

Computers for kids program begins

Beginning in September 2009, Sierra Dove Inc., and the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Posse, both area non-profit organizations will come together with Ruidoso Computer Genie to provide refurbished computers for youth in the high needs areas in our community.
Bill Yorston of Ruidoso Computer Genie will refurbished donated computers at no cost to the participating non-profit organizations.
Some of the computers will be utilized as part of an after-school literacy program for Ruidoso-area kids reading below grade level.
Sierra Dove’s new youth center, the Art Connection, is located in the Wild Herb center in Ruidoso.
Additionally, refurbished computers will be used to teach language arts skills and financial literacy lessons to youth ages 5-18 at the main unit of the Mescalero Girls and Boys Club.
“Initially, we will need to collect 20 computers to get the program going” says Dave Milchen, president of the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Posse.
Posse members will pick up donated computers and deliver them to Yorston, and take them to Julia Price at Sierra Dove when ready for service.
Anyone wishing to donate a computer or components to help area youth should call Sheriff’s Posse member Jimmie Browning at 575-354-0115 to schedule pick-up. All donated computers and components are 100 percent tax deductible. Any information on the hard drive of a donated computer will be cleaned off completely to military specifications.
